How to Match Your Countertops, Cabinets, and Flooring

When choosing new countertops for your kitchen, you are likely doing one of two things. You are either simply upgrading your kitchen countertops to something newer, or you are remodeling your kitchen by replacing the countertops, cabinets, and flooring. Before choosing your countertops, you must consider your home and kitchen style before making any choices. Today, we are going to walk you through it!

How to Approach Your Design

Countertop Replacement Only

When you are upgrading your countertops only, you must consider the materials of your existing floors and cabinets. The last thing that you want to do is choose a countertop style that is pretty on its own but ends up clashing terribly with your overall design. Your style, texture, and color choices should complement what you already have.

Countertop, Cabinet, and Floor Replacement

When doing a complete remodel, you essentially have a blank canvas. You can create anything you want! If you wish to make an all-yellow kitchen, go for it! However, when doing a remodel, we recommend choosing classic, complimentary styles, colors, and materials that will stand the test of time. You can save trendy prints or bold colors for easily replaceable items like towels, curtains, and paint.

Choose Your Starting Point

At the very beginning of your design process, you must choose your starting point. We recommend you choose between the following:

                             Most Expensive to Least Expensive

From a financial standpoint, you should choose your most expensive items first. This is because you want to keep those most expensive items the longest; you can always replace lower-priced items later if you want another redesign. Generally, cabinets are going to be your most costly items, so you should choose those first. Then, it is usually countertops second and flooring third.

                             Design Around a Focal Point

As we go through life, we often accumulate sentimental items that we want to include in the kitchen design; this could be a chandelier, a piece of antique furniture, a vase, or anything special to you. Additionally, you may just have a design element, like a quirky backsplash, that you absolutely love and want to include. Either way, you can build your design to compliment this focal point.

Picking Your Colors

Now that you know your starting point, you can begin playing with your colors. We recommend choosing three colors, two complementing dominant colors (such as white and gray) and one accent color (like blue or orange). Before choosing your colors, we recommend taking home samples to see how they blend with your home and lighting.

Remember Texture

Don’t forget that texture is vital when creating a beautiful design. If you have chosen minimalist colors, a bit of texture can add visual interest to an otherwise boring color. Whether you want matte, high-gloss, or even a rustic texture, each adds a unique look.
