Common Granite Countertop Questions Answered

Should I use granite or marble for my kitchen countertops?

Granite is often a coveted countertop material for kitchen countertops because of its durability and resistance to scratching, etching, and warping. However, every countertop material comes with its own set of pros and cons. Learn more about different countertop materials HERE.

Can I cut on granite countertops?

Yes, you can. Granite is an incredibly hard stone that a knife won’t easily damage. Please keep in mind that your knife might get damaged by the countertop, though.

Can I put hot pots on a granite surface?

Yes, you can. Heat will not affect your granite countertop to a point. Just remember that the granite will absorb the heat, so you do not want to touch the hot pot surrounding area as it may hurt your hand.

Can granite be stained?

While granite is sealed, which prevents most staining, it can still become stained if a liquid is left sitting on the granite for an extended period of time. For example, you would not want to leave a juice spill overnight as it may result in spots.

Can granite countertops be damaged?

Anything can be damaged if you try hard enough, even granite. Granite is a solid material, but high impact blows can cause it to chip; so, we wouldn’t recommend using a hammer on the countertop. Additionally, if the countertop is not properly sealed, it can absorb certain substances resulting in discoloration. Maintaining consistent, proper care will prevent most issues.

Can granite be repaired if damaged?

If you somehow manage to obtain a countertop crack, it can be sealed with epoxy. Depending on the extent of the damage, the crack may still be visible, but it will at least be functional.

What is the best way to clean granite?

The easiest way to clean granite is simply to wipe down the countertop with warm water and soap; this should remove any dirt from the surface. To make sure there aren’t any stubborn stains remaining, follow up this cleaning process with a solution made specifically for removing tough stains like coffee, tea, wine, etc., but avoid harsh cleaning products that will damage the stone.

How much does granite cost?

The price of granite varies. It depends on the type of granite, how much you need, and your location. It is also important to note the installation process costs as well, which vary from company to company.
